Step back - before the religion - to the love-centered message of Jesus himself.

In The Teacher, Robert Perry sets aside centuries of assumptions and starts over—“from the Bible up”—to discover what Jesus actually taught.

Rooted in the Gospels and Biblical scholarship, Th
e Teacher invites you to encounter a Jesus who may be different from the one you inherited—and closer to the loving, liberating teacher you have longed to find.

In this book, I examine Jesus’ core wisdom teachings from the Gospels, and arrive at a portrait of a man who taught a groundbreaking vision of an unconditionally loving God.

He asked us to undergo a profound transformation of the heart in which we come to mirror this purely loving God on earth. And he promised us that if we did, we would live in an exalted state, immune to all earthly storms and free of all fear.

I conclude that Christianity significantly departed from this vision, but that we can reclaim it in our time.

— ROBERT PERRY

The Teacher is for readers who are ready to:

Meet a Jesus untangled from centuries of doctrine — directly from his own words.

See the kingdom, the ethics, the miracles, and the cross and resurrection not as separate pieces of Jesus' story — but as one coherent whole, resting on a single, radical vision of God.

Trade theological baggage for a teacher worth following.

What You'll Learn

  • Why Jesus called himself a teacher — and how the early church quietly shifted the focus from what he taught to who he was.

  • How one groundbreaking vision of God holds together everything Jesus taught, did, and became — his ethics, his miracles, his death, and his resurrection.

  • What Jesus meant when he said the kingdom of God is already here, and how to enter it now instead of waiting for it.

  • How the crucifixion and resurrection fit themes in Jesus' own sayings and parables — not an exception to his teaching, but its clearest demonstration.

  • Why the apocalyptic sayings attributed to Jesus likely aren't his — and why this the crucial to reclaiming his real message.

  • Why the "seeds" of Jesus' teaching — even in diluted form — still shaped our world, giving us hospitals, human rights, and a line of influence running from Tolstoy to Gandhi to Martin Luther King.

The Jesus presented here consistently summons us away from status, wealth, violence, anxiety, fear, and exclusion toward a life shaped by humility, simplicity, defenselessness, trust, and inclusion. That radical summons to higher ground remains as revolutionary today as it was two thousand years ago.
